Hillhouse Care Charity began its life in 1975 as an organisation which aimed to care for homeless young pregnant girls and new mums. A house, located on Hill Street, Kilmarnock, was secured with the help of concerned volunteers, church groups and the local authority. The doors opened to accommodate up to 6 girls at a time, who, under the guidance of professional and committed staff, received 24 hour care and support while they adjusted to their situation and prepared for motherhood. Over the next 25 years approximately 150 young women were able to call Hillhouse their home. When they moved on they were given material help in the form of layettes, baby clothing and equipment. 2000 saw many changes including the building on Hill Street, Kilmarnock becoming a Children's Clothing Distribution Centre caring for babies and children up to 16 years of age. While no longer providing a home for young women, the charity has been able to support an increasing number of young families. A shop / centre opened in Auchinleck in 2005 in response to demand in that area. During 2010 alone Hillhouse Care provided help to 1200 families in need and we foresee an increased demand for our services in the coming year. The charity receives no government funding. The day to day running of the charity relies on fundraising, donations and the proceeds of its charity shops. A community grant has been secured recently from The Big Lottery Fund which enabled Hillhouse Care charity shop in Kilmarnock to move from basement premises to a dedicated retail unit in a high street location. Improved location and higher profile have meant an increase in awareness of the charity and its work. |
